NEV coolant lines: EPDM, TPV and nylon each have a role

With liquid battery cooling now mainstream, EV coolant circuits are longer and more complex, and material choices are diversifying beyond rubber hose.

Unlike combustion cars, new energy vehicles must manage the temperature of the battery, motor, power electronics and cabin at the same time. Liquid cooling is the dominant battery cooling approach, with some premium models using direct refrigerant cooling — significantly increasing the number and length of coolant lines.

Three main material families

  • EPDM rubber hose: flexible, coolant resistant and excellent at damping vibration — ideal for connections that absorb movement and for complex routing;
  • TPV (thermoplastic vulcanizate) tube: combines rubber-like elasticity with plastic processability, recyclable and lighter;
  • Nylon tube (e.g. long-chain PA12): light, compact and quick to assemble — suited to long straight or corrugated runs with quick connectors.

Trend: hybrid solutions

In practice, “rigid plus flexible” combinations are increasingly common: nylon for long runs to save weight, and rubber or molded hoses at connections to the battery pack, motor and pumps to absorb vibration and assembly tolerances. EPDM molded hoses therefore remain essential in EVs, with new requirements for cleanliness, low extractables and electrical insulation.

Nuotong follows EV thermal-management requirements closely and can develop custom EPDM molded coolant hoses.
